Barn Owl at dusk during a visit for our NENBC Inland Corners project showed well
Prior to covid we had the idea that we'd visit all the inland corners of the NENBC recording area. Generally these are under-watched areas and hold the promise of unexplored locations and undiscovered species. We had a trial run last autumn and now, after Omicron, we have re-started the project. Visiting a corner in the north-west of our area over the past couple of weeks we have indeed discovered interesting habitats and species. Last night on a dusk stake-out we found our target species - a superb Barn Owl quartering the set-aside fields below us. This was my first in the NENBC area this year and follows the previous year when I only had two records. Clearly this is a bird in trouble locally. A couple of sea-watches during the past week have picked up an increase in activity, with divers, ducks and waders all indicating more movement. Over 400 Red-throated Diver on the 1st, nearly a hundred Common Scoter yesterday and a few other records of: Great Northern Diver, Great & Pomarine Skua, Red-breasted Merganser and Grey Plover have all added interest. Meanwhile, the Red-breasted Goose, further along the coast at Cley, continues to entertain the crowds.
Movement of Cormorants have increased recently The Red-breasted Goose at Cley continues to show well and attract the crowds
