Sunday 6th March comments; When we think of conservation we think of the grand projects or protection given to certain species or habitats. Whilst these are obviously super important, we can also look at conservation on a small scale, the day to day changes we can make to help the natural world. Here on the Isle of May we can influence habitats to help species nest such as Terns or create areas free from disturbance to let seabirds get on with their nesting season.
This week we've been helping our Puffins as the boardwalk along Holymans road (a footpath on the island) has been extended. This footpath is a busy pathway for visitors and island residence but crucially it goes over the top of a fragile puffin colony. The boardwalk will help keep human feet from trampling and crushing burrows and keep people on the right track so whilst it may not look much, the boardwalk is another small piece of the conservation jigsaw.
As you can see we continue to prepare for the new season which is now fast approaching; as we open our doors on 1st April…are you booked?
