I don't have a lot to add to this.
Being a reporter was once a blue-collar profession, as in no college degree necessary to do the job. Lots of phone calls and pavement pounding were required, along with an ability to write, which can usually be cultivated through copious reading of excellent material.
Blue collar people live in the realm of reality and common sense. They know where babies come from, and it's not from legal judgments.
