Many writers have said our new religion of racial grievance and revenge has Christian roots. I believe they are at least partly correct, but that they too seldom recognize the way that black Christianity renovated the Old Testament notion that Jehovah is a hanging judge in a kangaroo court of racial reckoning. The Old Testament is, of course, filled with bloodthirsty appeals for Jehovah's aid in the racial wrangles of the Israelites, so it is not surprising that black Christians came to see the white man as proud Pharaoh, wily Amalekite, and foul demon rolled all into one.
