This has been a spectacular year for Mountain Laurel here in Western Mass. While the season is getting late (most have dropped their flowers by now) there are still a few spots with fresh blooms. As I drove along State Forest Road in North Quabbin (Petersham) I noticed this beautifully shaped example of this year's crop.

Mountain Laurel-Kalmia latifolia
It's a lovely plant in color (especially closeups of the flowers) but I thought that it lends itself to black and white as well. Also known as "spoonwood" it was used by Native Americans to create utensils and the name carried over although little used today.
