One morning, Herbie the Penguin was sleeping so soundly. Then Big Brother Penguin came running into the room, and said, "Herbie! Time to wake up!"
Herbie woke up and said through a yawn, "Haaaaaw, Big Brother. What's going awwwwwn?"
"Herbie, you've got to get up!" said Big Brother Penguin. "Today is our first day of church camp!"
"Oh, yeah!" said Herbie. "I'm so excited! It's at that church up on the hill, right?"
"Yes, of course!" said Big Brother Penguin. "That's the one! C'mon! Time to get up!"
So, Herbie got up, they both threw on their clothes, and both boys raced down the stairs to the kitchen. They got some cereal and fruit out for breakfast, ate it quickly, and each drank a big glass of water.
Once they were done, Mommy Penguin and Daddy Penguin walked into the kitchen.
"Good morning, boys!" said Daddy Penguin. "Are you two all ready to go to church camp this morning?"
"Yes!" shouted both boys. "We can't wait!"
"Well, let's get going then," said Mommy Penguin.
So, all four of them got in the van, put on their seatbelts, and they made the short drive to church. Their church was on a hill that overlooked their city, and, when they arrived, they saw the parking lot was full of families there to drop off their kids.
They parked, hopped out of their van, and guess who they saw when they walked up to the entrance? They saw all their friends! Windy the Fairy, Chicken the Magnificent, and even Stickmaster and Horse of Wonders (who you'll learn about in a later story!). All of their friends had decided to go to church camp with them!
"Bye! Have so much fun!" Mommy Penguin and Daddy Penguin said, as they waved goodbye.
"We'll pick you up at noon, okay?" said Mommy Penguin.
"Yes! Sounds good!" said Herbie and Big Brother Penguin. Then the two penguins turned back to their friends.
"We'd better find our leaders," said Big Brother Penguin. So all six friends grabbed hands and walked in the entrance of the church. They were part of Group B, so they looked in the church lobby for a big Group B sign, which they found easily enough. Even Herbie was able to spot the sign, as he was learning his letters at pre-school.
They found their leaders and their group, and, once everyone in their group had gotten settled, their leaders took them to their first activity. Their first activity was science, where they made their own orange juice. Then they went to their second activity, which was crafts. At crafts, they made slime, which was very fun! After crafts, they went to games, where they rode a 500-foot water slide down a big, long hill (It was summer, so the water slide was a great way to cool off in the heat!). Then, they had snack, which was pizza and pretzels. After that, they went to the carnival, where there were bounce houses, go-karts, and even a small roller coaster. Then, the next activity was acting out a skit as a group. In the skit, they each played different characters in a story about God. Their final activity was songs, where the music was very loud and fun, and they danced around and sang at the top of their lungs. All in all, they had the best time.
Once songs were over, their leaders told them that church camp was over for the day, and that they needed to go outside and find their parents, who had arrived to pick them up. Herbie, Big Brother Penguin, and their friends couldn't believe the first day of church camp was already over! They had been having so much fun that the morning had flown by.
Their leaders had them hold hands and walked them out to the parking lot, where Herbie and Big Brother Penguin saw Mommy Penguin and Daddy Penguin pull up in the van. Herbie and Big Brother Penguin waved goodbye to their friends, and shouted, "See you tomorrow!"
And that is the story of how Herbie went to church camp.
