Over the past few months, I have been working with school teachers to bring about an lunch time eco club to bring students with an interest in the environment, nature and wildlife together and it has been hugely successful!
We started the year by making bird boxes from scratch each week which everyone really enjoyed!
Once we had completed building them we went round the school site putting them up on various trees and fences.
Over the spring months we have started creating our allotment which is in the corner of our school field.
It has been doing really well and it's brilliant to see so many students of all ages from all year groups getting involved with planting and maintaining it!
We've been planting a range of different vegetables including beans, peas, radishes, potatoes and yesterday we started on squashes and courgettes.
We can't wait to keep carrying on watching the plants grow to a stage where we can all get together and harvest them!
In todays lunch time, I went round the school site with the sustainability lead (my favourite teacher!) to check all of the boxes we made and put up a few months ago.
We were very excited to find 5 out of 11 boxes being used which is super successful!!
Most are being used by Blue tits and are at the nest building stage, but in at least one of them we found a Great tit already incubating eggs which is exciting.
We can't wait to monitor the boxes throughout the season, and it's a really great reward for all of the students who made the boxes to see them being used!
I'm so happy with how the school eco club is going and it's brilliant to see so many students getting involved and I would encourage other schools to do the same!
