"Almira Gulch, just because you own half the county doesn't mean you have the power to run the rest of us! For twenty-three years, I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you! And now—well, being a Christian woman, I can't say it."
Aunt Em, The Wizard of Oz, directed by Victor Fleming (1939)
Aunt Em was a sweet woman who had fallen into the trap of believing that sweetness is the mark of a Christian. While her niece weeps, her chuckle-headed husband dithers, and the little dog Toto teeters on the brink of destruction, Aunt Em thinks it is her Christian duty to love Almira Gulch. I disagree. It is her Christian duty to love those who loved her—to wit, the weeping girl, the chuckle-headed husband, and the doomed dog.
