The Kentucky Derby is one of the most exciting events in horse racing and attracts thousands of visitors annually.

Run at Churchill Downs in Louisville on the first weekend in May, the Kentucky Derby is a race steeped in history and tradition, watched worldwide--TwinSpires have an excellent guide to the race.

Part of Louisville and Kentucky culture, the 'Race of the Roses' is a social highlight of the year. If you're planning to attend the Derby, there are some essential tips to remember to ensure your trip is enjoyable.

So here are five tips to remember when heading to the Kentucky Derby.

Check out these travel tips for the Kentucky Derby for your next adventure!

travel tips kentucky derbyBook early

One of the most important things you'll need to do when planning a trip to the Kentucky Derby is to book your entrance ticket and accommodation early. Derby day is extremely popular, so reserve your entrance ticket as soon as possible to ensure you secure the tickets you desire.

Accommodation options also fill up quickly during Derby weekend, so book a place to stay early to ensure you have your pick of the best options in the Louisville area. And of course, booking early can also see you pick up tickets and accommodation cheaper than they would be closer to race day.

Dress appropriately

As mentioned, the Kentucky Derby is a race steeped in tradition, so you must dress appropriately. Typically, men wear a suit or sports jacket while women wear a dress or skirt suit. Hats are also a traditional part of Derby day attire, with many women wearing hats or fascinators.

However, remember to check the weather in the run-up to the race. The weather can be notoriously variable in Louisville in May, and umbrellas are strictly prohibited at Churchill Downs, so if rain is forecast, take a rain jacket or poncho.

travel tips kentucky derbyArrive early

The Kentucky Derby is a popular event, attracting heavy traffic and big crowds, so arriving early is advisable. Gates typically open at 9 am, and it's recommended that you arrive at least two hours before the first race.

This allows plenty of time to find parking, get through security, and find your seats. If you're unfamiliar with Louisville, consider using Uber to avoid traffic and parking issues - there are dedicated drop-off and pick-up points at Churchill Downs.

Bring cash

Credit cards are widely accepted at the Kentucky Derby, but bringing cold, hard cash is also a good idea. ATMs can be hard to find on race day, and many at Churchill Downs charge fees; plus, when placing a bet, it's easier and quicker to use dollars than a card. So bring plenty of money but remember to keep it secure.

travel tips kentucky derbyPlan your day

he Kentucky Derby is a long day of racing, entertainment, and activities, so planning your day is essential. First, consider which other races you want to watch, plus any activities you wish to participate in.

Make a schedule for the day, and leave plenty of time for walking around and exploring Churchill Downs. Remember that the Kentucky Derby is a long day, so pace yourself and don't drink too many Mint Juleps.

So if you plan on taking a trip to the Kentucky Derby this year or in the future, hopefully, our top five tips to remember will help further enhance your enjoyment of a thrilling event.

And, of course, lady luck may be shining on you also, and you might enjoy the bonus of backing the winner of the Kentucky Derby, putting an extra gloss on a day to remember, plus a few extra dollars in your pocket.
