One lesson I particularly enjoyed in my classroom was the construction of imaginary maps using Ordnance Survey symbols. These masterpieces usually led on to some form of creative writing, describing landscape features.
Students loved choosing their own names for their imaginary maps - usually drawn as islands.
I recently came across this nifty little web site, that would have helped my pupils come up with interesting names for their created landscapes. It allows you to choose island names from a random generator.

The web site also has details of an app that can be used to provide tips on how to choose your own imaginary name.
It also includes a random generator for creating city names, story writing prompts, story generators, daily writing challenges, and a huge amount more!
