It is taking me a few extra steps to cut kindling. I did the clean up of the "kennel" wood pile. That work will make cutting kindling easier as the area is much easier to do the work. I had a little bit of kindling leftover in the kindling box so that is in the house and I did a lot of work gathering smaller chunks of wood that is between kindling and the chunks of firewood for heating the house.
I made my fire starters for myself and Mom. Empty "paper" egg cartons make the best base for fire starters. The cupcake paper fire starters require more paraffin wax compared to the egg crates. If you look at the price for commercial fire starters you can save a lot of money even if you buy wood chips, paper egg cartons and paraffin wax. I really like Strike anywhere matches for starting a fire but I have a lot of bic lighters and strike and flint for a fire starter. You don't have to go all 1800's in your prep if you have stored a few lighters and have flint/strike back up. Selco that lived through Bosnia war in the former Yugoslav says Bic lighters was a great trade item. I buy up strike anywhere matches when I find them as a any rough surface will light a match.
I split some chunks of wood that were part of a wood dump of a few years ago. One of the things I did get right was restacking wood that was older/seasoned moved to place I could access it. This is not wood I have bought from the local firewood supplier. This wood was of wonky sizes and quality but after my cleanup of the wood pile it needed to be cut down to fit in stoves.
Mom has a small home and a few hard wood chunks can heat her home. She has a tough time splitting wood so I split the wood I had on hand that is just a couple of boxes worth of wood. But I cleared out an area to cut up some oversized wood for my wood stove. It's a win/win. Mom get the wood she wants and I clean up area the work for cutting up more firewood.
Public Utilities are seldom sued for failure to deliver power. I'm not talking about natural disasters like a storm, hurricane or tornado but seasonal events like it is hot in summer or cold in winter. NE is facing a 60% spike in cost for energy this winter and all of the politicians in the NE stopped pipe lines for fuel and new electrical lines to provide power to NE. I feel for the people that did not vote for the "Climate Change" politicians. It is sad to say that many people won't learn unless they are hit in the pocketbook.
The Biden Administration via SOS Anthony Blinken is saying the USA wants provide LNG/na.t gas to the EU while the USA is seeing a spike in energy costs especially LNG. This Biden administration has restricted permits for energy. Do how does the USA provide the EU with gas and not provide the USA with LNG?
Mass. is looking at a 60% of energy costs this winter at best. I doubt the rest of NE is looking better as they don't want pipelines from Penn. or hydro power lines from Canada. Keep voting for the status quo and you will keep getting the results good and hard.
