It is not pleasant to awaken from the dream that you still have plenty of time. When you were startled by wars and rumors of wars, you comforted yourself with the dream that peacemakers would make peace, and that there still was plenty of time. When you were stunned by the malignancy of men in high places, you consoled yourself with the dream that surgeons are skillful, the cancer was small, and there still was plenty of time. When you were shocked to discover that the timbers you trusted were riddled and rotted and false, you cradled yourself in the dream that termites gnaw slowly, carpenters fix quickly, and there still was plenty of time.
