Do Revenge follows two unlikely friends Drea (Camila Mendes, Riverdale) and Eleanor (Maya Hawke) as they team up to get revenge on the other's enemy and get even for past grievances. Drea was once the school's Queen Bee but the leaking of a sex tape kicked her right to the bottom of the school's pyramid whilst Eleanor is an outside who was made out to be a predator when a nasty rumour got spread around about her. The two befriend each other the summer about the sex tape scandal and decide to 'do each other's revenge', knowing this way they're unlikely to get caught.
As part of the plan Drea befriends Eleanor's ex Carissa (Ava Capri) who spread the offending rumour and Eleanor gets a makeover to fit in with the in crowd- befriending Drea's former friends Tara (Alisha Boe, 13RW), Meghan (Paris Berelc) and Montanna (Maia Reficco, PLL) as well as Drea's ex Max (Austin Abrams) who leaked the video in the first place. Both plans run smoothly at first but then real feelings start to get involved as Drea befriends fellow outcast Russ (Rish Shah) and Eleanor begins to actually fit in with the populars. Can the pair sucessfully pull off their revenge plans or will a surprise from the past throw a spanner in the works and ruin things forever?
Do Revenge was a truly iconic watch and I do feel this film will one day become a pop culture legend, reaching the same level of popularity as Mean Girls or Clueless have done before it. The premise, performances, soundtrack and overall aesthetic of the film were all completely top notch and I just loved everything about it. Already I have seen this film reach top levels of popularity and I think the only way is up for Do Recenge. Truly icon level.
The film's pastel aesthetic paired with its darker themes was just so visually stunning and I absolutely loved the Rosehill school setting. The mint and lavender uniforms were actually something I would willingly wear and I just wanted to go to this school and surround myself with revenge madness. The film definitely played into a lot of iconic teen movie cliches and tropes- not to mention having the Sarah Michelle Geller as the headmaster- and I really loved catcjing all of the little quirks and references, the amount of detail here was amazing.
The plot twist that it was in fact Drea Eleanor wanted revenge on and not Carissa was brilliantly done and I truly did not expect it or see it coming. Drea definitely showed somewhat selfish attitudes throughout the film but this was definitely on another level and it was quite the gut punch for the character. The pair's friendship has been built up so beautifully and so this complete act of betrayl by Drea was almost heartbreaking to watch. Speaking of friendship though I loved how Eleanor and Drea ultimately came together after realising that their friendship, whilst fake in some parts, was real enough that they cared more about each other than getting revenge. Friendship is such a complex and tricky thing and a shared bond between two people, even two enemies can be strong enough to power through anything and I just loved how this was the film's final message- it was surprisingly wholesome for a revenge film.
Overall I really enjoyed watching Do Revenge. The film's set up and characters were both great and I really loved the pastel academic vibes. The later plot twist then elevated the film to the next level and I loved the importance of friendship even in such a messy situation. Do Revenge was a fun and campy comedy with some great performances and overall brilliant aesthetic, definitely one to add to your list.
