When I visited MacLeod Field here in Amherst Monday morning, I was hoping to find either some early summer wildflowers, I did not, or insects, I did. Apparently May 30th is the special day for whatever species of Tipula this is as there were several doing their thing.
I shot several angles of this pair and another which, I guess, makes me a little bit of a cranefly porn perv.
Many people mistake craneflies for mosquitoes and kill them needlessly. As a child my parents told me they were male mosquitoes and killing them was good pest control. I live with my regrets for doing so.
And coincidentally, while I've been making this post a lone cranefly has been buzzing me, maybe one of those Tipula restless souls I released as a child, and checking out this pair on the display.
