"He went to sea in a thimble of poetry."
Poet Warning, Jim Harrison
He cast off early
just as dawn was breaking
saw the blues there, saw the greens
dreamed the clouds were Kingdoms ruled
by distant Kings and Queens
He'd often wondered
what it took to get there
this airy realm, this realm of mist and ice
to feel the cloudburst on his skin
like breath of paradise
He cast his net wide
took in sea-brack, blown-in
flotsam, things that people leave
out on the beach to travel with
the tide's incessant weave
He wove their stories
like a winter cloak, hardwearing
weathered with fabled centuries
from pieces of their lives he made
enduring histories
He wrote mine down too
wrote it down and sung it
wistful, dreaming on the breeze
that somehow it might reach my heart
beyond those swelling seas.
