In the beginning there was type 1 and type 2 diabetes.  Doctors warned you to change your lifestyle to reduce your risk of becoming a type 2 diabetic.  Times are now worse with one-third of the American adult population classified as obese by the CDC.  This horrifying statistic created a new diabetic category called prediabetes.  What the hell are we doing to ourselves to have prediabetes as an official condition/illness?

November is American Diabetes Month, and unfortunately a health condition affecting 88 million people per year.  The silver lining in this diabetic cloud, is that you can come off this unfortunate list any time you want.  Nobody is born with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes; you have to earn them.  The pandemic made earning this not noble characteristic a whole lot easier.  While the government wanted you to stay home to stop the spread, even though obesity was and is the top risk factor for coronavirus death, they did nothing to stop you from more weight gain and diabetes risk.  The lines at your local Canes, KFC, Popeyes, and Chick-fil-a were wrapped around the block.

Food choices are the top reason people have prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.  They eat to much processed foods and foods with refined sugar added.  The American Diabetes Association says there is not one specific eating plan or diet for people with, or to prevent type 2 diabetes.  Their suggestions are based on common sense and FDA recommendations to reduce or eliminate processed foods, soft drinks, excessive alcohol, and foods with added sugars.  Eat five servings a day of nutrient dense, and low-calorie fruits, vegetables, beans, and legumes.  Substitute trans fat items with nontrans fat items like olive oil and avocados.  Choose fish, poultry and lean cuts of pork or red meat, stay away from meats filled with nitrates.

WFH life has wreaked havoc on exercise and physical activity.  People are more attached to their laptops and devices than ever.  This constant connectivity making Zoom Zombies out of everyone increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.  A sedentary lifestyle is the culprit for many health risk factors and diseases like cancer.  The ADA and CDC recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous exercise.  What does that mean?  Your breathing should be labored when having a conversation during exercise. You can choose any form of exercise you like!  Mix and match them to achieve a higher and happier fitness level.  Include weight training twice a week for bone and muscle strengthening.  Use a fitness expert like me to help design a safe and effective program you can maintain for a lifetime.
