A carry-on is a wonderfully versatile piece of luggage. It is not small enough to be a shoulder bag and is not large enough to need checking in like other suitcases. If packed correctly, there is no reason why you can't travel very comfortably with just a carry-on for company. Read ahead for the ultimate carry-on packing tips that will save you money, time, and effort as you won't need to wait in line to get your luggage or pay extra fees for added weight.

You might be tempted to opt for a large carry-on backpack for purposes of convenience as you whiz through an airport or land in exotic locations. The suitcase however is a more sensible choice as you can use the rollers underneath for easy transit without having to manage all that weight on your back. Many people also have health problems or get travel sickness such as nausea and dizziness and that makes luggage in your hands or on your back painful and unrecommended.

What you should know about packing a carry-on

This guide will give you some tips on what you should know while packing your carry-on luggage.

Maximize space

When purchasing a carry-on make sure you get the biggest size that is allowed and make sure it has wheels for easy transport. You can pair the carry-on with a large shoulder bag or laptop bag or even a backpack for your other smaller essentials like electronic devices, phones, money, meds, and so on. This means that you won't need to book an extra suitcase.

Use packing cubes

When packing everything you need for your trip in a carry-on suitcase, packing cubes are going to be your best friend. Not only does packing in cubes make for great organization of your belongings, but it also makes it easier to fit larger or bulkier items like winter coats, shoes, or essential self-care appliances. Many of the packing cubes available now also have compression capabilities which means you can put in your shoes and clothes and it will compress to become as small as possible without causing any damage to the items. That can really increase the space available to you.

packing carry onArrange your clothing

When packing in a carry-on you want to make sure you have sets of clothes that are versatile and can fit a number of situations. Pack some bottoms that are appropriate for your traveling purpose such as hiking, sightseeing, or simply work-related. Tops should also be neutral so they can be amped up if there is something formal or you need to appear more dressed than usual. You can never go wrong with a pair of jeans or comfortable walking shoes!

In terms of bags, you may want to invest in a good waist bag if you're mostly going to be sightseeing or hiking or on your feet a lot. A waist bag helps carry the most useful of items like a phone, money, painkillers, or even a camera. Don't go too extravagant in terms of the shoes you pack, two pairs are more than enough for any trip and you can wear your bulkiest pair while traveling so you don't need to pack it. An old trick is to stuff the shoes inside disposable shower caps so they don't dirty your other items in the carry-on.

Toiletries

A basic set of toiletries is usually given at most hotels so apart from specialized skincare items there may be no need to go overboard on packing toiletries. However, if you aren't sure of where you are going to be staying you can buy a good hanging toiletry bag because those bags fold up and take less space, and can be conveniently hung up on any hook on a door. If you are traveling with a companion you can have one of most items like shampoo or toothpaste so less space is consumed.

Always keep ziplock bags on check for all the liquids, which should ideally be less than 100mls. If you are unsure of certain items that you may need for medical reasons such as medical marijuana you would do well to get the required information before you travel to avoid problems later on. Search 'can you bring weed on a plane' on Google or medicine-related restrictions.

You can also use solid versions of toiletries like balms, tinned shampoo, or solid deodorant to prevent spillage and also ensure you don't run out while on your trip as solid versions last a bit longer.

What should not be in your carry-on

Avoid packing electronics into the carry-on, ideally, have them in your shoulder bag or backpack. Furthermore, try to have medicines in your handbag for easy accessibility on the plane or in the airport.
