On daily life like a pond a circle a perimeter

but deep enough to drown witches

tell me the password and you can go in

and spend some time with the kids

kickabout and expensive ice cream

relish the day and their ages

down the tracks we see a train crash

many pretend to be dead

many more fake living

after school we'd see the children leave

the similarity to hostages and the cold light

of day is not lost on any of us

but we acted not, just finished the paperwork

and planned holidays we couldn't afford

so, there we are—say it, say it and mean it

learn the list and repeat it when pressed
