Once over these Siberian waifs were rare, with 1-2 records per year but over the last decade numbers have exploded and it's now not unusual that they can be one of the most commonest warblers in late autumn on the east coast. On the Isle of May numbers have mirrored the national trend as we have been going through a boom period and it is not unexpected to get at least 20 during the autumn. But not this year.
This year it has become scarce down the east coast and until yesterday, the Isle of May had not claimed any! Thankfully an individual arrived and has been feeding around the Low trap and was caught and ringed. The bird remains for its second day and it's a delighted to have such a visitor, which is probably been enjoyed even more this year considering it might be the only one! Its nice to have them back.
