Recently someone told me that we should not have specific goals. We should just have visions. For example: This person says if you want to lose 20 pounds in 6 months, that is a goal. He said having this goal sets you up for failure. In 6 months if you haven't lost the 20 pounds, you have failed. Instead, he says we should just have visions. In this situation he says we should just aim to lose weight in general and feel better.
So, the only part I agree with is that its a good vision to want to lose weight and feel better. I completely disagree about the goal part, though. I think specific goals are what motivate us to push harder. If we never set specific goals, what are we even aiming for? OK so I want to lose weight.... I lose 1 pounds... GREAT! NOW I CAN GO EAT AN ENTIRE PIZZA BECAUSE I DID WHAT I SET MY VISION ON!
No way! I feel its so much healthier to set that specific goal to lose the 20 pounds. It reminds us of what we are working towards. It pushes us. It gives us accountability. And even if I don't hit my goal in the time I had set my mind on, I still succeeded because I never gave up my efforts. I never quit and I have the ability to set a new goal.
