Virgin Orbit recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to explore joint efforts using Virgin Orbit's responsive drop launch rocket system and SwRI's extensive expertise in space mission development. As part of the MOU, the two organizations will also explore opportunities for joint manufacturing as well as the delivery of space platforms and services to Virgin Orbit customers.

Of note, Virgin Orbit and SwRI are especially interested in pursuing efforts focused on leveraging space data to inform decisions around weather and environmental monitoring. The global space data market segment is projected to grow significantly in the coming years, which could bode well for any future Virgin Orbit and SwRI joint ventures. According to a recent report published by Allied Market Research, the global satellite data services market garnered $5.52 billion in 2019, and is estimated to reach $19.36 billion by 2027.

"As the Virgin Orbit team works to build on our recent successes, we're excited to join forces with organizations like SwRI to propel forward our mission of opening space for good," said Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart in a company press release. "We're especially looking forward to combining our uniquely responsive air launch capabilities with SwRI's broad spacecraft expertise to provide turnkey solutions for our most pressing environmental challenges."

According to the Virigin Orbit press release, the two organizations may also combine forces to develop and launch satellite constellations to provide comprehensive space service offerings to customers.
