Ok, so, I know everyone's first thought when reading the title of this blog is: "Um, you give yourself a reality check and realize that you can't slow time."
I completely disagree, though. I've noticed that the older I get, the faster time seems to be. I think the reason for that is because as children, we don't pay attention to time. We get up, someone feeds us, we spend the day doing as many fun activities as possible until its time to go to bed. We don't have to worry about what time it is. We don't constantly worry about what we have to accomplish for the week. We don't worry about deadlines. As kids, we live in the moment. We focus on right now.
As adults, our minds are constantly preoccupied with thoughts like:
"What do I need to get done today?"
"How long do I have to get this done?"
"I can't wait to get through this week and get to the weekend."
"In 2 months I'll be on vacation."
All our adult time is focused on getting to tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. We don't live in the moment. Also, we fill up way too much time on our devices. I know I personally can waste a good hour very easily mindlessly scrolling through TikTok. I see people at dinners together staring at their phones. When we spend time with each other, we always have a device close by that we compulsively have to check or look up something.
So, I feel a couple of the simplest ways to slow time are:
Live in the moment. Make sure to take at least one day a week where you can fill the day with things you enjoy and that don't pressure you to focus forward. Be in the now.
Get off your phone. Plain and simple. I know how hard it is to resist. So, one thing I try to do is leave my phone in another room. I only check my phone if I go through that room. I try not to bring it with me all the time. Instead of looking everything up, talk to each other.
Are you focusing on right now? Are you appreciating the moment you are in? Are you stuck to your device?
