University Work in The Gallery at Redlands

Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

Victor Hugo

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.

Joel 2:28 (KJV)

I cannot describe my feelings this morning. I've had a couple of weeks to absorb the reality of teaching an online course in the Humanities for Texas Wesleyan University after being away from that institution for several years. But twenty-four hours ago, I was extended the invitation to pick up a classroom lecture course in Ethics beginning Monday. I have cleared today's calendar to focus only on the scope and sequence of that second class, realizing I'll stand in front of a classroom and look students in the eyes once again. I thoroughly loved that life for over thirty years, but had accepted that that chapter was closed.

The reason I feel so buoyant this day is because of the power of Ideas, of Words. The university in 1972 was the sacred space that spawned my first original ideas, my most moving thoughts. And for nearly fifty years since then I have strenuously hoped that I could reach some with that same kind of power, that I could serve as a conduit to connect students' minds with that awe-inspiring current, that winsdom force that changes lives and improves our world.

I wish I could write more now, but I have to hit the books. The clock is ticking. Our Gallery at Redlands is stretching toward the weekend with our Art Talk on Friday night at 7, and Art Walk on Saturday 10-3. And then college starts Monday . . .

Thanks for reading.
