Nadia from Tortuga Shades - Austin, Texas
After the band portrait, I made a closeup of Nadia, the lead singer from Tortuga Shades. A single person in a frame is more typical of what I shoot. This is the same gear and exposure settings as yesterday's band photo. The Fuji GFX 50R with the new Fuji 80mm f1.7 lens. Wide open at f1.7, 1/125 of a second shutter at ISO 1600. I also underexposed by 1 stop.
The lighting is terrible. However, with some extra post-processing, I eked out an acceptable portrait. Underexposing allowed me to tame the harsh light. I also lifted the shadows.
The 80mm f1.7 on the GFX makes it equivalent to a 63mm f1.3 in full-frame terms. At this distance, even wide open, I was able to keep most of Nadia's body tack sharp. We also get a desirable shallow depth of field. I suppose the bokeh could be better. The out-of-focus lights are not perfectly round.
The lens is incredibly fast to focus, even on the comparably slower Fuji GFX 50R. It's more compact and lighter than Fuji's traditional GF 110mm f2 portrait lens and $500 less expensive. Given that I like shorter focal lengths and compact lenses, the GF80mm f1.7 is more enticing. However, the $2,299 list price will make me think twice before pulling the trigger.
