Reflections at the Oslo Opera House, September 2016

This week, Patti and the Lens Artists asked us to show what inspires our photography. Something I had to think about for some time. I am usually out looking for something to tell a story here on my blog, perhaps some interesting history or a sign of the current times, or maybe just something beautiful like a sunrise in Venice.

Thinking harder, I would say that juxtaposition triggers much of my photography - grabbing my attention, or guiding my composition. It could be as simple as old and new, or dark and light, or shapes that contrast and collide. Often it is wider than that: maybe signs of old glamour in a place where that no longer fits, decay in a new modern city, tourists versus inhabitants, or people looking lost in the place around them. Reflections feature heavily in my work, and sometimes, the juxtaposition I find injects some humour into the story.
