Why is this of interest to geographers? China's virtual monopoly in rare earth metals puts it in a very powerful position and one where it could well use its rare earth exports as an important bargaining tool in world trade talks. Prices of rare earth metals could sky rocket - affecting most of the rest of the world. For instance, the USA imports 80% of its rare earth metals from China. As the world transitions to a cleaner future, the demand for rare earth metals is expected to nearly double by 2030, and countries are in need of a reliable supply chain.
