Harvest Intermediate and DeForest Area Middle School students enrolled in band for the first time in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades are getting the unique opportunity to get started on their band instruments before school, get to know other students in their grade, and have a fun time!

Beginning Band Camp is a summer school program that's been running for the past four years. Instructors are hired to help with differentiated instruction to give students the best start possible.

Instructors include: Melissa Ludois and Charis Boersma on flute, Mary Prior on clarinet, Joseph Matura on saxophone, Brandon Bautz and Doug Hoeft on trumpet, Katie Heidtke on F Horn, Scott Boland on low brass, and Stephan Cherek and Matthew Endres on percussion.

In addition, many high school students and alumni have been assisting teachers and students during camp. Those volunteers include: Lizzy Horner, Claire Lefeber, Hannah Lewis, Rachael West, Megan Marhol, Dean Wink, Sawyer Lawton, and Gavin Denning.

With the addition of Harvest Intermediate School, Band at DeForest will be starting in 5th grade for the first time since Band was established at DeForest in 1930. "We are very excited to be starting students in 5th grade and giving them the best start possible, especially coming off of the school year we had," says band teacher Katherine Heidtke. DAHS Band teacher Brandon Bautz says, "It has been an absolute joy to see students so excited about band and wanting to learn how to play their instruments. There is so much enthusiasm. I am very excited for the future of the band program at DeForest as we continue to build."

The camp runs weekdays August 2-13 at DAHS with an AM and PM session designed to help with Covid mitigation. On Friday, August 13, there will be a concert at Fireman's Park in DeForest at the bandshell. There will be a performance with the AM group at 11am and the PM group at 12pm. All are welcome to attend.
