Don't throw any rice.
I know that these are spotted orbweavers-Neoscona sp-but which species I am not sure as I could not get an angle to see their abdomens without destroying the web. At first I thought they were fighting and maybe that makes this make up sex.
The male is smaller and on the left so has to be nice and not upset his larger partner. After some back and forth approaches...consummation.
The male deposits his sperm in the proper place and then they are done. I wasn't able to stay long enough to see if he survived. Males sometimes experience this as their final few moments of life similar to praying mantids. But there was a neat little package stuck to the web later on. Of course it could have been anything. All this drama just outside the door.
