I've been going to bed most nights between 8 and 8:30 so with it being summer and the sun setting around that same time I have not been able to photograph many night flying moths. I don't set up a lit sheet or use black lights to attract them but if they come to our house with the back door open and the outside light on then I take advantage. Bentley and I go out around 3 a.m. and it is quite dark them. A few moths do alight on the house and one in particular caught my eye Wednesday morning. But by the time I got the camera out it was gone.
Fast forward to this morning and after Bentley and I came in there was the same species, maybe the same individual, caught between a window and screen. I captured it on my hand and put it outside where it settled on our foundation and stayed long enough for me to make a few images. I was quite happy even with such an unnatural background.
Nais Tiger Moth- Apantesis nais. There is a very similar species A. phalerata-Harnessed Tiger Moth that is almost identical but there are a couple of things that differentiate them (such as hind wing that for this is yellow of which I saw a flash while it was on my hand) and I think my ID is accurate. But I am open to correction. Either way it's a beauty of a moth. Yes...I do see the doggie on its shoulders.
Despite the dearth of insects I complain about, I am seeing something new and different every day. Maybe if I keep complaining ...
