Scientists tell us that habits emerge because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort. If it was up to the brain, it will try to make almost any routine into a habit, because habits allow our minds to ramp down more often.

As it relates to our routine actions, when our minds ramp down the brain is ready to engage with something new or more important. Since we have done something so many times that it has become a habit, the decision is already made, so our brain switches its energy and attention on to something else. The issue is that the brain is not making those decisions anymore – they have automatically been made.

"Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord's coming is getting closer." Hebrews 10:25 (CEV)
