As the world starts to increasingly talk about COVID-19 related lockdowns again, it has been an increasingly depressing summer on the travel front. That is why it was really good to get out and do some traveling, even if it was only to some local spots in the Midwest United States. On a positive note, I was able to visit some locations that I have really wanted to visit for some time, but have been putting off because of larger travel goals. I think many of us forget how beautiful our own areas are when wanderlust gets a hold of us. In this travel journal entry, I am going to give you an overview of my Great Lakes trip and let you know what aspects of the trip I really enjoyed and which I found challenging.
In case you don't follow my blog closely, this summer I chose to take a Great Lakes trip to some of the top kayaking and hiking destinations in the state of Michigan. As you can see in the map below, after departing Milwaukee, my first stop was to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park on the shores of Lake Superior. This is a park that I have visited in the past, but have never really had a lot of time to explore. Not only did I dedicate a full day to exploring the park, but I also spent some time exploring some of the beautiful waterfalls in the neighboring area. After leaving the park, I headed to nearby Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to do some hiking along the coastline and spent the next two days kayaking in Pictured Rocks and at the infamous Turnip Rock near Port Austin, Michigan. It ended up being a very memorable trip with some of the best hiking and kayaking that I have done in quite a while. If you haven't taken a Great Lakes trip yet, I would strongly suggest checking this beautiful area of the United States out when you have a chance.
Overall, my Great Lakes trip was an amazing trip. I got to see and do a lot of things that I have been wanting to accomplish for quite some time, but have never made time for. One of my favorite parts of the trip was by far the kayaking. I have kayaked in Lake Superior before when I visited the Apostle Islands, so I had some idea of what to expect. However, everything in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is at such a larger scale. The seaside cliffs are much bigger, and so are the crowds. While I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of the coastline, I was a little turned off by how busy it was in the water along the pictured rocks.
If you are looking to get away from the crowds and kayak in peace and quite, then the Apostle Islands is probably a much better destination for you. However, I think every avid kayaker will enjoy the sheer beauty and challenge of kayaking along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore at least once in their lives. One thing that I would love to do is camp out down by the lake at either Mosquito Beach or Chapel Beach. It would be such an incredible experience to watch the sun rise and set over the tall lakeside cliffs and be able to kayak in the lake all day long. I am definitely adding that experience to my ever-growing travel adventure bucket list.
