Instant gratification. Our culture has become obsessed with instant gratification. If we have to put out too much effort or wait too long for what we want, we see it as not worth it. I see this in so many areas of life. We don't want to eat at a restaurant if we have to wait more than 10 minutes. We don't want a career if going to school is going to take too long. We don't want to go to certain vacation spots because the travel time is too long. The last one that makes me the most frustrated is folks wanting instant gratification with health.
I've been on a health and weight loss journey my entire life. I've had some periods of doing super well and feeling great, but the majority has been me not putting out my best efforts. Therefore, I haven't been all that healthy. Still, though, I never give up and constantly try to keep my focus on a better version of me.
Lately I've seen so many people jump to quick fixes in health.
"I've started taking this pill to help me lose weight."
"I've been giving myself injections to speed up my weight loss."
And the most frustrating to me, "I'm going to get weight loss surgery."
Now let me first say this. Yes, I do see where surgery can be good for some people. Many people have health conditions that warrant them needing surgery to get themselves to a safer place in their journey. Some people have put out genuine efforts to get healthier for a long time and find that only surgery will work for them. The frustration I'm talking about is with people that don't want to do the work. Some folks refuse to exercise, refuse to drink more water and refuse to change their eating habits. Yet, they sign up for surgery.
Well I have bad news for you. It won't last. Yes, you can get that surgery and will most likely see some rapid weight loss results, but because you haven't taken the time to make the mental change to learn how to become a healthy person...... the weight is going to pile back on over time.
Whatever happened to putting in the work? What happened to learning how to eat better? What happened to learning to better yourself? I hate that weight loss has become something that can allow instant gratification. Its dangerous. Its unhealthy...... it won't stick.
