A flight of 199 steps takes you up from the harbour to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey, giving great views of the town and coastline. References to the steps go back to at least 1340 (wooden then, not stone) and it is believed they were used as a test of Christian faith for those who wished to worship: a form of pilgrimage to get to the church.

And now, someone says the original count was wrong!
