Today my husband and I attended a funeral. There was a wonderful man that used to work with my husband that passed unexpectedly a few days ago. The funeral was held at my husband's work which happens to be a church. The service was beautiful. They made it a celebration of life and a worship service.
The pastor was sharing a story about the man that had died. He recently had been doing some very in depth training with a new dog at his house. The pastor asked the man why he was going through so much hassle over a puppy. His response was: "two months of pain for a lifetime of pleasure." Apparently he was on a two month plan to have this dog trained.
That quote really stuck with me. There is so much in life that we avoid or quit because in the moment it just seems too hard, too complicated, too boring, etc. Yet, we don't think about what things will be like after we get through that hard season of "training". I think of all the different areas that this can apply.
Health - exercising is hard in the moment, healthy foods might not taste as good, but once we have committed the time to get healthier, we reap such wonderful benefits in the long run.
Money - sometimes a job might be harder if we are to make more money. It might suck having to go without certain things in life in order to pay bills or increase our savings account, but in the end we can be debt free and afford nicer things because we took time to save.
School - I'll be the first to say that I hated high school. I did really well in my classes though. College also was very hard as well as the last 18 months of my life where I chose to get licensed as a massage therapist. Again, the school isn't always fun but the end result of the knowledge we can gain and the job opportunities that open up to us make it all worth while.
There are so many more examples of things that we might not enjoy or want to see through during the hardest part of it, but in the end we have to take the time and see that the best things in life are "two months of pain for a lifetime of pleasure."
What do you need to see through today in order to reap benefits later?
